Brian Skerry is an underwater photographer for National Geographic and had begun to turn his camera to the problems that these fish and animals are facing in the ocean. His first opportunity to see the wildlife in danger was when he went to take pictures of Harp seals in The Gulf of Saint Lawrence. He noticed two big issues in that area that he felt were necessary to change: The murdering of seal pups for (believe it or not) dog food! The other problem he had is that the ice was melting due to global warming because this area is the breeding ground of the pups. The pups need twelve days to fully mature and with the ice thin, they can slip and die in the water.
And with that, he saw the potential to do more to help these amazing creatures of the sea. So he proposed a global study on the global fish crisis. I was blown away by the numbers of how many fish have been killed in the last fifty to sixty years. For example, ninety percent of tuna, sharks, and bill-fish have been killed. He wanted to show people how these fish were caught and the horrible ways they were treated. When fishing if they fish for a certain fish such as shrimp and they catch something else such as tuna they let those animals die on board instead returning to the ocean where they belong. This is the major cause of fish deaths in the world next to over fishing.
On earth we are killing over one-hundred million sharks a year. I have been fascinated with sharks ever since I was a kid and it hurts me very much that people would kill these beautiful creatures and to not feel pain. Even the most endangered marine animal in the world is still being hunted. C'mon people we need to get some common sense an get this changed Today!! These animals deserve to be treated with the respect that deserve.
